I haven’t posted in a while. All the function in the application is complete. Although, as in all projects like this, I have a full list of like-to-dos, but time is limited and I have to get on. I have been writing the thesis document. Hard enough to write that, so I haven’t invested any effort in these posts.
The document was turned in, as scheduled, on Sept. 1. I have some worthwhile feedback, and I am editing now. Expect to have edits complete by October 1 and if all goes well, the book goes to the binder and the final copy goes on the shelf on Oct 15.
In the meantime, I have been showing the application to several people in the Massachusetts government, with interesting feedback.
There may be a real possibility with redistricting at the state level. I have met twice with our local Representative as well as the staff of the Committee on Elections. I am meeting on Oct. 8 with the state Senator who has the most institutional experience with redistricting. Then they want me to meet with the Chairman of the state Committee on Elections. At a minimum, they recognize that citizens don’t understand redistricting and want some way to get them involved.
The state uses precincts instead of tracts or blocks. There 40 state Senators and 160 Representatives. Note that one Senator District does not contain 4 Representative’s Districts. I can revive the voter registration, election history and financial demographic information I collected for Massachusetts and include that. My original plan had been to do that for CA, FL, NY and TX as well, but the data just wasn’t available.
I didn’t intend it, but I believe the application has an architecture that will accommodate this approach. Geography files describing nested regions that divide a state. Statistical characteristics associated with each region. Visualization to explore those characteristics at several levels. Display information on the map. Interactions to move regions around and see the results. Import and export plans. See the results on Google Earth / Google Maps.
We’ll see where this goes.

So – you looked at commented on my blog! Not sure exactly how I can help you.
Are you enrolled in the Master’s program at Harvard?
I write my thesis there and it satisfied the requirements for my degree.
It was never published beyond that.
My advisor suggested I should modify it and submit to several periodicals and conferences, but I never has enough time.
