I’ve worked through a coloring scheme and it seems OK for now. Here is a map of MA cities, along with the color key. The map is showing the percent Caucasian population in each city relative to the state average. The horizontal axis of the key indicates how much the characteristic for a city varies from the state average. In the vertical direction, how much the population density varies from the state average.
I think there is reasonable contrast between the value and density ranges. I may have to do some more work on the labeling, and probably state the specific item being measured where it currently says “Demographic Characteristic” but good enough for now.
